Historic Meaning of Byeokgolje
Byeokgolje was a reservoir to
irrigate the water for rice farming.
It was from the period of no figure earthen to
start rice farming. It came across Yellow Sea to the western sea area
later than the New stone Age with dry-field farming.
The natural irrigation led the artificial irrigating facilities such
as bank. The natural irrigation was performed at the river area through
the western sea where has a big difference between the rise and the
fall of the tide.
As the tide changes, the river flows backwards at high tide and the
clean water is filled in twisted alluvion. Although it varies for
each landform, the low land close to the mouth of the river had the
best condition for farming. Using simple levee, when clean water came
in, people opened the levee and when it went out they closed the levee
to store the water. It is the most primitive type of irrigation and
used from the New stone Age in China.
Byeokgolje is the more advanced irrigation facilities, which is the
first big reservoir. It promoted the rice farming culture. Gimjae
is the place where farming developed early with the best natural conditions,
fertile soil and proper climate.
Gimjae plain, the center of Honam Plains, is the cradle of rice farming
culture with its early rice paddies. |
