History of building and rebuilding of Byeokgolje

The Size of Byeokgolje

  - Bank Height 4.3m, Width (top) 7.5m, Width (bottom) 17.5m

Remains of Repair Work of Byeokgolje

¢º Dwaebaemi

  - Location: 137 Pogyo Village, Pogyo-ri, Buryang-myeon
  - Meaning: More than 10,000 people were mobilized for the repair work of Byeokgolje, and it was extremely hard to check the number of workers everyday. Even the workers were carrying the rack on their backs. Dwaebaemi (Seundap) is the checking method of placing the workers on a certain rice paddy repeatedly to number the workers. The size of rice paddy was 518 pyeong. 18 pyeong was ridgeway and 500 pyeong was actuall rice paddy. One worker stands with his carrying rack and leaves the space for passing makes 1 pyeong. Therefore the number of workers standing on the rice paddy was 500 people. Since it was the method of measuring grains (Dawe), it was called Dwaebaemi

¢º Shinteolmi Mountain

  - Location: West of Pogyo Village
  - Meaning: Straw shoes didn't last long. Only one-day work wore out the shoes. And since they were made of straws, a lot of earth got stuck on the bottom. Because the working days were long, the shoes that workers threw away made a mountain. It was called Chohye Mountain or Shinteolmi Mountain.

¢º Myeonggeum Mountain

  - Location: Shindu-ri, Buryang-myeon
  - Meaning: It was the repair work of Byeokgolje in the years of King Wonseong of Shilla when they started to call it Myeonggeum Mountain. The bad weather and a blue dragon delayed the work. Since they had to fininsh the work before the farming season, people worked late hours. The governor made a big fest with drink and food for one day. Danya-nangja played Geomungo for this fest. From the next day, the work process got faster and they could fininsh the work before the season. The legend says that people called it Myeongeum Mountain (Playing Geomungo) because Danya-nanagja played Geomungo here.

¢º Jaeju Bank

  - Location: Wolseung-ri, Buryang-myeon
  - Meaning: During the repair work in the 15th year of King Taejong (1415³â), the place where only the workers from Jaeju Island were working was called Jaeju Bank. The others say that since the traffic condition was not as good as these days, the workers from Jaeju Island arrived after the work had finished. They were disappointed and made a bank under Myeonggeum Mountain, and it is Jaeju Bank.

¢º Sangyong-nori (Double Dragon)

  - Meaning: There was a big fight between a good white dragon and a bad blue dragon, and people supported a white dragon to defeat the blue dragon.
