The
zelkova tree at Dongryeong, Haengchon-ri, Bongnam-myeon,
Gimje was designated as the natural monument No. 280
on November 3, 1982. Estimated to be 500 years old,
this giant tree has the height of 20m and circumference
of 10m at height of 1m above the ground, and takes
up the area of 425m2. According to the villagers,
the broad and good leaves of this tree foretends the
good harvest of the year and poor leaves poor harvest.
A folktale handed down in this village claims that
if the rocks called Chilseong Bawi next to the tree
were a little higher than it is, a rebel would have
been generated from this village.
Villagers who believe that this tree is the guardian
tree of their village take care of this tree wholeheartedly
and hold a ceremony to the tree wound with thick rope
on January 3 by the lunar calendar every year for
the peace and wishes of the year.
